Forum Wrap-upAdolescent development plays an important role in how young people react and deal with the challenges and daily activities that are very normal and a real part of being a young person. These include socialising with friends, getting around town, learning to drive or being a passenger with a young driver, going to school, TAFE or uni and working part time. This year's forum tuned into why young people do the things they do, from the perspective of what is happening with their still maturing brain and in consideration of their physical and psychosocial development. The Forum began with a formal opening by The Hon. Jillian Skinner MP, NSW Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, who spoke about the importance of communicating with young people and our recent understanding of the true nature of adolescent brain development. The morning session included a comprehensive introduction to the mysteries of the adolescent brain. 130 delegates were lead through the physical stages of development by Professor David Bennett, introduced to the influence of puberty and hormones by Professor Kate Steinbeck and were bedazzled by Professor Iain McGregor’s presentation on the dramatic effects of drugs and other stimulants on the adolescent brain at a time of great development and growth. Ms Margaret Prendergast from NSW Centre for Road Safety gave some insights into the influences on young people in regard to road safety. The morning session was summarised and brought full circle through the NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People, Ms Megan Mitchell as she spoke about contemporary risks to children and young people. The morning session presentations were well received with delegates stating they felt the overall order of speakers flowed well and the broad range of information on adolescent development was engaging, relevant and thought provoking. In particular the sessions about adolescent brain development and alcohol and other drugs were highly valued. This is encouraging as the aim for the morning sessions was to increase knowledge and understanding of adolescent development in a holistic way in preparation for the afternoon workshops. The afternoon session had participants break into 3 concurrent workshops- 'In Educational Settings', 'On the Roads' and 'In the Workplace'. The workshops explored how the characteristics of young people cause them to be vulnerable to injury and harm. It also aimed to provide prevention strategies to help address the challenges professionals face when working with young people. Summaries for each workshop are available to view below.
